N84 is an informational alert that further installment payments are forthcoming. The payer is paying the service over time, and this remittance is not the last payment you should expect.

What N84 means

Some payers spread payment for a service across several payments instead of paying it all at once. N84 marks a remittance as one of those payments and tells you more will follow. It is informational: nothing is being denied, and there is nothing to correct.

N84 may appear with deferral codes such as CARC 143 or with CARC 271, which relates to periodic payment schedules.

What to do

  1. Post the payment to the correct service and leave the remaining balance open.
  2. Record the installment schedule if the payer provides one, so staff know when to expect the next payment.
  3. Watch for missing installments and contact the payer if a scheduled payment does not arrive.
  4. Notify the payer if treatment ends early or the patient transfers care, to avoid overpayment and later recoupment.

Which services are paid in installments?

Payers may use installments for treatment delivered over time, such as orthodontic care, or for certain equipment and long-running services. The payer's policy decides.

Should I write off the unpaid balance?

No. Leave the remaining balance open as expected payer receivables until the final installment arrives.

What if treatment stops before all installments are paid?

Tell the payer. Installments are usually tied to ongoing treatment, and continuing to receive them after treatment ends may lead to recoupment.
