N662 Remark Code: Payer Waiting for the Final Bill

N662 is an alert that the payer will not consider this claim for payment until it receives the final bill. It typically appears when an interim or partial bill was submitted for a stay or course of treatment that is still ongoing.

What N662 means

Some payers pay long hospital stays, extended treatment, or large injury claims only once the whole episode is billed. If they receive an interim bill, one covering part of an ongoing stay or service period, they may decline to process it and send N662 instead. The message is simple: send the complete bill and they will consider it then.

It usually appears with CARC 135 and is common on facility claims and on some workers’ compensation and auto bills.

What to do

  1. Confirm the payer’s policy on interim billing. Some accept interim bills after a set number of days; others never do.
  2. Hold the account until the patient is discharged or the service period ends.
  3. Submit a final bill that covers the entire period, including the charges from the interim bill, following the payer’s rules for final bills. Do not send it as a separate duplicate of the interim charges.
  4. Watch the timely filing clock so the final bill goes out well within the payer’s limit.

If you have a payer that consistently rejects interim bills, set up your billing system to hold those accounts until discharge.
