What N624 means
A workers’ compensation carrier pays only on an open, active claim. N624 tells you the claim linked to your bill has been withdrawn, so there is no workers’ comp coverage for these services. This is different from a denial on the merits: the claim simply isn’t being pursued.
It may appear with CARC P4 or P2.
What to do
- Confirm the withdrawal with the adjuster and ask for written confirmation, including the effective date.
- Tell the patient and collect their health insurance information.
- Bill the health plan, noting on the claim that the condition is not being handled under workers’ comp. Update CMS-1500 box 10a if the plan requires it, and attach the withdrawal confirmation if asked.
- Check filing limits at the health plan right away, since time has likely passed. See timely filing denials.
- Bill the patient only when no coverage applies, following your financial policy.
How to prevent problems
For work-injury patients, collect health insurance at the first visit even when workers’ comp is expected to pay. If the claim changes status, you can switch payers without delay. See coordination of benefits denials.

N624 FAQ
Why would a workers' comp claim be withdrawn?
The worker may decide not to pursue it, the report may have been filed in error, or the injury may be handled another way. The reason usually doesn't change what you need to do.
Will the health plan pay for a work injury?
Health plans often exclude work-related injuries, but many will consider claims once they receive proof the workers' comp claim was withdrawn or denied. Ask the plan what it needs.
Can the claim be reopened?
Sometimes, under state rules. If it is reopened, the carrier may then process your bills.
