MA53 Remark Code: Missing Competitive Bidding Demo ID

MA53 means the claim is missing, or has an invalid, Competitive Bidding Demonstration Project identification. Claims for items furnished under a competitive bidding demonstration must carry that identifier so the payer can apply the demonstration's rules and pricing.

What MA53 means

Medicare has tested competitive bidding for durable medical equipment and supplies through demonstration projects, in which participating suppliers were paid bid-based amounts in defined areas. Those claims had to be identified as part of the demonstration. MA53 says the identifying information for that demonstration was missing or could not be validated.

MA53 applies only to suppliers taking part in such a demonstration. If you do not take part and receive it, check whether the payer’s records link your items or patient to a demonstration area.

Common causes

  • The demonstration identifier was not included on the claim.
  • The identifier was entered in the wrong field or format.
  • The item was furnished in a demonstration area but billed as a standard claim.
  • The supplier’s participation status in the demonstration was not set up with the payer.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm participation. Check whether the item and patient fall under a demonstration you participate in.
  2. Get the correct identifier from the demonstration documentation or payer.
  3. Correct and resubmit the claim with the identifier in the field the payer specifies.
  4. Contact the payer if you do not participate and believe MA53 was applied in error.

How to prevent it

  • CO-16 (Claim/service lacks information or has submission/billing error(s).): Required information is missing or invalid, with MA53 identifying the demonstration ID.
  • MA50 (Missing/incomplete/invalid Investigational Device Exemption number or Clinical Trial number.): The IDE or clinical trial number is missing or invalid, another program identifier.
  • M138 (Patient identified as a demonstration participant but the patient was not enrolled in the demonstration at the time services were rendered.): The patient was not enrolled in a demonstration on the date of service.
  • CO-B7 (This provider was not certified/eligible to be paid for this procedure/service on this date of service.): The provider was not certified or eligible to be paid for the service on that date.

Is this the same as the current DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program?
