What MA15 means
When a claim contains services that need to go through different processing paths, the payer may break it into separate claims so the simpler lines are not held up by the ones needing review. MA15 tells you this happened. The remittance in front of you covers only part of what you billed.
Your posting system may show the unreported lines as unpaid, but they have not been denied.
What to do
- Leave the missing lines open. Mark them as pending on a split claim rather than denied.
- Watch for the second remittance. It may carry a new claim number, so match it by patient and date of service.
- Do not rebill. A resubmission while the other part is processing can trigger a duplicate denial; see how to avoid duplicate claim denials.
- Follow up if it stalls. If no second notice arrives within your normal follow-up window, contact the payer with the original claim number.
Codes that may appear with MA15
- CO-45 (Charge exceeds fee schedule/maximum allowable or contracted/legislated fee arrangement.): A standard fee schedule adjustment on the services that were processed in this part of the split.
Related and easily confused codes
- OA-18 (Exact duplicate claim/service (Use only with Group Code OA except where state workers' compensation regulations requires CO)): A duplicate denial that can occur if you resubmit services from a split claim that is still processing.
- N202 (Alert: Additional information/explanation will be sent separately.): An alert that additional information will be sent separately.
- MA67 (Alert: Correction to a prior claim.): An alert about a correction to a prior claim.
MA15 FAQ
Where are the other services from my claim?
They were moved to a separate claim and will appear on a different remittance, often with a different claim control number.
Should I resubmit the missing lines?
No. Resubmitting them risks duplicate denials. Wait for the separate notice, and follow up with the payer only if it does not arrive.
Why would a payer split a claim?
Payers split claims when some lines can be processed immediately while others need review, or when services belong to different processing areas.
